Many of the criticisms of Kelley Walker: Direct Drive have been directed at the artist as a white man appropriating images of the black body, which brings into question other aspects of the artist’s biography. Walker is a gay white man who grew up in rural Georgia. Does the intersectionality of sexuality and race within the work change the narrative? What comes into view if Direct Drive is seen from a queer perspective—from gay icon Little Richard to King cover girl Trina to a chocolate disco ball? Washington University’s Jeffrey Q. McCune, Jr., Associate Professor of Women, Gender, Sexuality Studies and Performance Studies will lead the discussion.
