SUMMARY:Artist Talk + Tour in The Ville: Tony Cokes
DESCRIPTION:Please note: the start and end location for this event is Counterpublic’s Hub in The Ville at 4140 Dr. Martin Luther King Drive\, St. Louis\, MO 63113 \nIn celebration of his exhibition at CAM as a part of Counterpublic 2026: Coyote Time\, join artist Tony Cokes and Counterpublic curator Stefanie Hessler for a conversation at Antioch Baptist Church as part of a walking tour of The Ville neighborhood. The talk and tour will trace the full arc of Cokes’s project\, which includes a video on CAM’s facade for Street Views\, a video installed in the church\, and billboards bridging these two sites. Counterpublic staff and artists will also take visitors to other Counterpublic 2026 artists work in the neighborhood. Comfortable shoes and weather appropriate clothing is recommended. The tour route requires navigating uneven and unreliable city sidewalks. Please note that this event takes place in The Ville and coincides with the Northside Trap Run.  \nVisit Counterpublic for event details and to register. \n  \n\nAbout the artist \nTony Cokes (b. 1956\, Richmond\, VA) lives and works in Providence\, Rhode Island\, where he serves as Professor in the Department of Modern Culture and Media at Brown University. Cokes was awarded a MacArthur Foundation Fellowship in 2024 and the Rome Prize in 2022–23. A solo presentation of his work\, Texts\, Tracks\, Talks (1992-2026)\, will open at The Institute of Contemporary Art at Virginia Commonwealth University\, on September 18\, 2026. Other recent solo exhibitions include Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein\, Vaduz (2025–26); Batalha Centro de Cinema\, Porto (2024–25); Dia Bridgehampton\, The Dan Flavin Art Institute\, Bridgehampton\, New York (2023–24); Hessel Museum of Art\, Annandale-on-Hudson\, New York (2024); and many others.
