This Friday, CAM also hosts the Land Lab Competition Kick-Off Event, as part of the three-day Sustainable Cities Conference. The City of St. Louis estimates more than 10,000 vacant parcels have come into its ownership through tax foreclosure—and nearly 20 percent of all property within city limits is vacant. This joint program between the City of St. Louis and the Washington University in St. Louis Office of Sustainability seeks to reframe the issue by turning vacant land into an opportunity that inspires innovative thinking and leads to tangible, sustainable projects.

Ron Sims, the former Deputy Secretary of the US Department of Housing and Urban Development, will speak at the event, and the program will explore vacant land in cities as open canvasses and opportunities for sustainable interventions. Competition organizers will formally launch the public competition, providing key dates and information for participants, as well as opportunities for all attendees to actively engage in idea generation. In this inaugural year of the competition, Old North St. Louis will serve as the pilot neighborhood.
