CAM is thrilled to join up with Left Bank Books as they relaunch their reading group Read the Resistance for a special series inspired by the exhibition Stories of Resistance. Each month, a virtual discussion group will unpack the selected book through prompts and visual cues from artworks in the exhibition that inspired the book selection. March’s selection is The Broken Heart of America: St. Louis and the Violent History of the United States by Walter Johnson, a searing portrait of the racial dynamics that lie inescapably at the heart of our nation, told through the turbulent history of the city of St. Louis. The book was selected in response to Dread Scott’s Slave Rebellion Reenactment (2019), a community-engaged artist performance and film production that, on November 8-9, 2019, reimagined the German Coast Uprising of 1811. The event is accompanied by the release of the Radio Resistance episode “Organizing Rebellion,” featuring Scott and Johnson.
Books are available at CAM or Left Bank Books at our discounted reading group rate. Please email Shane at Shane.m@left-bank.com with any questions.
