CAM presents Mickalene Thomas: Mentors, Muses, and Celebrities; Hayv Kahraman: Acts of Reparation; Street Views with Zlatko Ćosić’s A Murmuration; Hedge, an architectural installation in the courtyard; Meredith Foster: Fire and Fat presented by Teen Museum Studies; and LEAP 2017.

Artists explore themes of identity, race, gender, migration, and the ephemeral nature of reality this season at CAM. Through film, video, photography, and installation, Mickalene Thomas focuses on black women who inspire, who represent, and who express a wide range of possibilities and desires. Hayv Kahraman’s paintings of women are fueled by her experience as an Iraqi immigrant, addressing such fundamental issues as gender politics, migrant consciousness, and collective memory. Born in the former Yugoslavia, Zlatko Ćosić’s art practice is also shaped by war and displacement, with his video “motion painting” presenting sudden shifts from the real to the abstract. Hedge, created by the design team of Jason Foster Butz, Nathaniel Elberfeld, and Lavender Tessmer, is a gentle intervention in the CAM courtyard made from recycled materials that will change with light, weather, and the seasons. In CAM’s Education Gallery is the work of local artist Meredith Foster, an exhibition organized by participants in the Teen Museum Studies program, and adjacent to the gallery LEAP Middle School Initiative students express their ideas of peace through collage.
