RE: The Body and Movement

Antonio Douthit-Boyd, Co-Artistic Director of Dance at COCA and Alvin Ailey dancer, responds to the photographs of Paul Mpagi Sepuya with words, movement, and images of his own. He dances to Nina Simone’s version of “Ne Me Quitte Pas” (“Don’t Leave Me”), the Jacques Brel song, choosing Simone for “the pain and beauty of her voice.” He also moves to a backdrop of photos he has taken of neighborhoods in which he grew up, “a small collage of the past” of places “destroyed by violence and the crack epidemic.” He speaks to and performs this past, he says, “so it remains present in my future.”
