ArtReach engages St. Louis communities, both inside and outside the Museum’s walls. Using its exhibitions as the basis for curriculum, CAM partners with schools—including every St. Louis Public middle and high school—to provide off-site visits, museum tours, and workshops with artists. Through CAM’s ArtBus, a mobile art studio, the Museum brings hands-on experiences directly into neighborhoods throughout St. Louis, visiting schools, community centers, festivals, street fairs, and partner organizations. The first ever ArtReach Intensive began in spring 2016 and continued in the fall. CAM staff met weekly for two months with students at Carr Lane Middle School, Northwest Academy of Law, and New American Academy. The students of these diverse schools were encouraged to explore their neighborhoods, their own stories of immigrant, as well as issues of social justice through art-making. The resulting I Am project appears in CAM’s Education Gallery.
