Known for her cartoon-like characters engaged in ambiguous activities, Laylah Ali’s paintings imply narratives that address a wide variety of political and societal concerns. Her carefully-created images deceive us with their buoyant color, yet at the same time delve into some of the more disturbing impulses revealed in the workings of individuals and groups. In Laylah Ali: Paintings and Drawings, Ali presents a series of rarely-shown drawings and paintings on paper in two special viewing rooms, specifically created for the exhibition.
Laylah Ali: Paintings and Drawings is organized for the Contemporary Art Museum St. Louis by Andrea Green, Curatorial Assistant.
